Welding Safety Is About Air Safety and Extracting Fumes
The great irony of welding is that despite the fact that it is an indispensable part of modern industry, it also carries a lot of potential danger for workers that don’t respect the tool. The most obvious hazard is the light created by welders that is so bright that anyone looking directly into it without protection can suffer permanent eye damage. Another hazard is the heat and “spatter” that comes from using these tools. The heat is unavoidable, since the torch is designed to cut or melt metal, but some of that heat is spread in the form of the debris that may splash away from the area of work. These potential hazards need smart protection for skilled tradesmen in order to let them work safely, but there’s one other area that needs to be addressed and that’s how safe the air is to breathe in the work area.
Particles & Fumes
When a welder goes to work, it is transmitting so much heat onto the material being worked on that some of the material vaporizes. That doesn’t mean that steel, aluminum or other material actually disappears, it just means that these materials are too small to see, and are now light enough that they can float in the air. Just like with ice melting into water that then evaporates into moisture in the air, welded materials do the same thing. However, breathing in fumes or vapors that contain particles of iron, steel, copper, or other metals is definitely not safe for people. Depending on the type of materials being worked with, breathing in particulate from welding fumes can be as inconvenient as causing minor respiratory problems, or as serious as developing “metal fume fever,” which is an illness of the nervous system. Even cancer is possible for people that breathe in the wrong fumes one time too many.
Work & Breathe Safely
Portable fume extractors are an efficient, practical solution to protecting yourself from the welding fumes that arise from some types of work. The great thing about portable fume extractors is that they are mobile enough to be brought to wherever the work is being done in a shop. Some of the portable fume extractors we carry even have HEPA filters that work to keep out dust and other particles in addition to dangerous fumes. We carry a range of portable fume extractors from entry level models by Ace to mid-range and high-end portable filters by Lincoln Electric. Depending on the extractor you choose, some may be complete kits, while others will need the additional purchase of an extraction arm, in which case, it’s up to you to decide which arm suits the needs of your working environment. All of these fume extractors will give you the protection you need and peace of mind to work.
