Welding Safety Is About More Than Light & Heat
There are few techniques in the heavy industry that immediately look as dangerous as welding. Many people underestimate just how much damage a hammer or a drill can do under the wrong circumstances. But as soon as a tradesman turns on a welder, the intense light and heat are obvious enough in their power and danger.
But while welding presents a clear threat to the eyes, and another to the skin from heat and the potential spatter that comes off the material being worked, there’s another risk many people forget about. Heat applied to any material is a chemical reaction, and one of the possible results of a chemical reaction is vaporization or fumes. Once hazardous materials are in a lighter-than-air form, they become much easier to overlook and even breathe in. This is where safety equipment like respirators comes in.
We Don’t Take Air For Granted
The PAPR or powered air-purifying respirator is a relatively recent type of technology used in a variety of different settings, including welding. As humans, we require a constant supply of oxygen, and most of us can only hold our breath, on average, for about one minute. Under normal circumstances, however, we’re constantly breathing through our nose or mouth.
Depending on the type of work setting we find ourselves in; however, the air we breathe may not be safe. For people working in a workshop, for example, the constant cutting and sanding of wood, or the cleaning of substances means that tiny pieces of wood and dust are always floating in the air. For these large particles, a filter mask worn over the mouth and nose is sufficient to block these particles. But for smaller particles, fumes, and vapors, something more drastic is required to ensure safety.
Working and Breathing Easy with a Respirator
Welding, in particular, represents a few hazards all at the same time, which is one of the reasons why the PAPR for a welder is such a specialized piece of equipment. In order for welders to work safely, they need a welding helmet that dims the blinding light of the torch itself, but the welding helmet can be quite large to protect the entire face.
At the same time, the heat of the welder is working different types of metals such as copper, steel or aluminum. That creates fumes with particles that are very small. A traditional mask filter may not be sufficient protection to keep harmful substances out of the lungs; so powered respirators are required to actively purify the air before sending it to the nose and mouth to breathe. We have PAPR units from both Lincoln and Miller that accommodate the specific, demanding needs that tradespeople face when it comes to welding. We even have particulate respirators from 3M when you need something a little less intensive.
